The integration of evil in the film “Upgrade”. The plot of the film takes place in a fantastic future, where technology is introduced not only into human life, but also into the body - people have implants and chips. The hero of the film Gray is a man who likes to do everything with his own hands: he repairs cars, and does not have any implants or chips. He is distrustful of the world of high technology, which cannot be said about his wife Asha, who is trying to combine both an idealist and a capitalist, adhering to the values of both sides. Gray symbolizes an immature and unseasoned consciousness. At the beginning of the film, he is pure and innocent, for example, from English “gray” is translated as gray, a color that has never been used in icon painting, since it was considered the color of obscurity and emptiness. Asha symbolizes his soul - Anima. Thanks to the Anime, a man has contact with his instincts, but in the film, Gray's wife is already infected with high technology and comfort, which dulls her intuition. Gray and his wife go to Aaron, for whom Gray repairs cars. Eron lives underground, the entrance there is marked by two stones similar to a pyramid, which symbolizes entry into the lower world, the world of the dead or hell. The very descent into Eron’s home should have already alerted Asha, but, alas, she does not see any signs indicating that they might encounter something sinister. When they approach the entrance to Eron's dwelling, the sunset is visible in the background, and, as is known from Egyptian mythology, the sun dies in the west, it descends to the lower world, undergoes a test and... renewed, reborn in the east. So is the hero, he must descend into the very darkness of his soul, pass tests, he must defeat the dragon and be reborn in a new capacity. When Gray and Asha find themselves below, a dead tree can be seen behind them, this tree can symbolize the Kabbalistic tree of death, but it can also be seen as a sign that the hero will not complete his journey, and therefore will not complete his path of individuation. The hall in which Eron is located is decorated with panels painted in golden light, which at the end of the film will turn red, which already suggests that Gray's innocent, pure consciousness will be captured by evil. Eron appears before us as a genius who has created something that will help humanity . From Latin the word “genius” is translated as spirit. And as the film progresses, we see that Aaron is a genius possessed by a spirit. He shows the guests his invention, Stem, and presents this invention as the future of all humanity. Then events unfold in a sad way. On the way home, the car loses control, Gray and his wife get into a car accident, where they are attacked by a group of people. Asha is killed and Gray is wounded. After this incident, Gray finds himself completely immobilized in a wheelchair. Gray undergoes his initiation in Eron's dungeon, where STEM is implanted into his spinal cord. Out of curiosity, I looked up what the word “stem” means in English; it is translated as stem. For example, in many fairy tales, the stem symbolizes the axis mundi, which connects the upper and lower worlds, just as the spinal cord connects the lower and upper parts. The spinal cord is associated with a stem along which one can rise to a higher level of consciousness. It would seem that the hero has been initiated, it’s time to go through the hero’s path, but Stem begins to drag Gray into situations that make him more and more dependent and helpless. The chip that controls Gray's body seeks to take over his mind and body, he finds where Gray is vulnerable and where his weakness is. Gray, after the death of his wife, lost any sense in living further and was seized by a strong desire to avenge her death. Stem seems to help Gray find the real killer of his wife, but with each situation Gray feels more and more helpless and completely trusts Stem. Many films about the devil and his methods of capturing a person’s soul are similar: the devil always tempts, inspires confidence, or offers such means or methods that at first.
