When they write about how a psychologist can organize and create his own private practice, they talk about the office, pricing, the need for personal therapy and supervision on an ongoing basis. However, all these measures will be ineffective until the psychologist will begin to privately master sales skills. And the faster, the better. In the article, through the “time line” exercise, I will show (see figure) effective and ineffective ways for a psychologist to organize his successful practice. Ineffective organization of a psychologist’s practice is very simple. A psychologist starting his professional path is in no hurry to learn sales. First, he graduates from a university or receives professional retraining, then begins to master the modality and reads a lot on the topic, watches videos, attends master classes, then joins intervention groups, adds personal therapy and a supervisor who relieves him from impostor syndrome, in the process of communicating with colleagues, he begins to master another modality, having heard rave reviews about its effectiveness. The psychologist conducts many free consultations and consults colleagues for donations and reviews. Finally, realizing that professional training and personal therapy of clients in themselves does not give practice, he decides to attend courses on content promotion and begins to learn sales. From this moment he begins to build a practice. Unfortunately, time has been lost, a lot of financial and energy resources have been spent. How a psychologist can organize a private practice: a successful timeline About 25 years ago, the author of the article received a diploma in professional training and arrived at a practical training group psychologist profession. At the end of the 5-day seminar, I received instructions from my mentor six months before the next seminar to conduct several paid sessions and organize a practice by opening an office. I was dumbfounded. Moreover, he said that, according to his observations, those who open a practice now and begin to apply the knowledge and skills acquired during training will become successful psychologists in a few years. His installation worked. I started buying books on marketing and opened an office. Placed advertisements in newspapers. I paid for the next training with the money I earned during the practice. By the way, out of 59 people who received instructions to open the practice of my fellow students and psychologists, 13 people had successful practice by the end of the course, 4 of them have their profiles on the B17 website in the city of Vladivostok.A rest? Their fate is unknown. Although several more people got jobs as psychologists in government agencies, I don’t consider this a private practice. Therefore, if you are at the very beginning of your journey, I suggest this movement along the timeline: decide on the target audience and the topic in which you will improve, take the first ones into practice clients and recoup their initial training, learn sales, promotion and grow professionally at the same time. Conclusion: a novice psychologist needs to start mastering content promotion skills almost at the very beginning of his practice, learn to sell his services. Act consistently: master a professional skill - immediately put it into practice and recoup the cost of training, try a new direction, study sales techniques and again - practice, practice and practice again.
