From the author: The article is devoted to aerophobia and methods of combating it. The author also tries to motivate people who have this problem to start fighting it. Aerophobia, which sometimes takes years to treat, can really cause discomfort. This is not just about discomfort during the flight. When a person suffering from this disease realizes that he will have to fly, he begins to painfully get used to this idea. Not knowing how to overcome aerophobia, he poisons the life not only of himself, but also of those close to him with the process of painfully waiting for the flight. We don't even mention the restrictions that this person imposes on his life. However, not everyone is trying to get rid of aerophobia. Some of my clients began to treat this fear only after they faced the business necessity of being on another continent. All other business trips were carried out by ground transport. When an attack of fear occurs on an airplane, all the assurances of statisticians that the number of road accident victims is many times higher than the number of people killed in plane crashes turns out to be unconvincing. An absolutely irrational attempt to imagine those 10 kilometers that separate the plane from the Earth completely takes over the consciousness. To ease her pre-flight panic, the husband of one of my clients brought her to the flight crew and asked the crew to help calm her down. The pilots had a lot of fun: “When you land, you will have to touch the plane, or, better yet, stroke it. When you get on the plane, be sure to say: “Airplane, airplane, you are so big, so reliable, take me to St. Petersburg.” My client did everything she was told. I think that the pilots’ recommendations fully reflect the entire range of their professional fears. Most often, aerophobia begins with the fact that a person either witnessed a plane crash, or while in flight, unusual situations arose on the plane. The experienced fear or state of uncertainty (difficult landing, bumpiness, frightened faces of flight attendants) turns into a psychotraumatic event, which delays worries about the inability to control the events of one’s life and, in general, the lack of guarantees.” The more complex and stressful the lifestyle, the more energy is spent on experiencing the fear of flying. Aerophobia courses, as a rule, work in several directions: a general reduction in anxiety, a cycle of hypnosis sessions that weaken the very experience of fear in flight, work with primary psychotrauma that provoked the emergence of pathological reactions. If the client does not want to be treated, then he can be advised to load his consciousness as much as possible during the flight. The most common remedy for aerophobia, alcohol, helps much less often than it is used. It is important to have several different types of activities in order to switch the focus of attention. Have a good flight!
