The story of the main character and his family is dramatic, and at the same time archetypal in the experiences that the heroes themselves experience, and those that we meet in life. "Tides" is based on the best-selling book by Pat Conroy. The situation that happened to the main character in childhood left the trauma behind for many years. All participants in the terrible event had to hide their pain for most of their lives. Depriving them of the opportunity for social success. That night the children experienced truly animal fear. And not being able to share their experiences and their pain, they pushed them deep into the unconscious. The main character is an intelligent and thinking man, but unemployed and not very successful. Unstable relationship with his wife, hatred of his own mother. Detached relationship with father. When asked by the therapist about what happened then, he answers “I don’t know.” The answer of a child who closes his eyes to avoid the fears and monsters of the past. The video I have attached below reflects this moment. The psychological problem is always that we cannot let go of something. We cannot let go of something that has died and is already rotting , poisons real life. The past can hold tight, but what happened will no longer happen. Learning to let go is the main skill of any movement towards change. Having launched a book at Tom, the therapist helped him stop portraying the “gallows laugh”, and helped him begin to talk through the situation of violence from childhood. After he gave himself the will to live through his feelings, and received the acceptance and sympathy of the therapist, having gone through shame, Tom seemed to have thrown “a mountain off his shoulders.” I think that it was at that moment that a state of internal liberation and sadness arose. As you know, the experience of light sadness is a resourceful state. It says that what has died has already been released and the path to the exit is visible. And this is an indicator of successful separation. There is no more terrible pain, there is sadness, but everything will be fine ahead. The transformation of the main character takes place through the relationship with the therapist’s son, when he teaches him football, and through intimacy in the relationship with the therapist himself. Susan did not reject Tom when he revealed his secret, did not consider him weak or helpless, on the contrary, she saw a man in him. This gave Tom a new awareness of himself. A new experience that ultimately allowed him to make a decision in favor of his family. What is Tom's root experience? This is powerlessness. The impossibility of this powerlessness to resist the rapists, to save the mother and sister. A traumatic experience binds consciousness with a certain psychic energy in that place. And this is clearly revealed in Tom’s behavior. Having talked through the pain with the therapist, mourning that little boy who was a victim, Tom created a new reality and discovered new strengths in himself. The past situation of a child who experiences shame and guilt, powerlessness, will no longer be able to influence his future life. Because there will no longer be a feeling of powerlessness: I am sitting on the couch and cannot find a job. This is the same situation of powerlessness as in childhood. It is necessary to show aggression in order to act, but he could not show it at the time of the attack, and could not then in later life. If we cannot live through some situation, then the unlived experience fixes us in this role of the Victim and does not give us the strength to resist or change anything. This was the case with the main character until the moment of the story about the situation of the attack. The healing power of love helps Tom return to himself and, ultimately, to his family. The love that he had inside under a thick layer of guilt, fear and shame. Love has the power to change any negative scenario into a positive one. The love that Tom did not receive in childhood has now transformed his inner state, turning him towards the perception of joy. The film also reveals the theme of the relationship between children and mother, the theme of relationships with the father. How did these relationships affect the failure of children in society? How do you think? look that allowed Tom to open up and trust the therapist, and aroused in him the desire to talk about terrible events? Where is the switching point that triggered the transformation
