Recently I wrote about the influence of the media on the development of self-esteem in children of primary school age. As promised, today I want to voice several principles that will help form high (but not inflated) self-esteem in your children. discuss with the child the success of his educational and other activities (expectations and personal results); give the child the opportunity to evaluate the results of his own activities and his peers (over time, a critical attitude towards his own work grows, and excessive criticism when evaluating the work of his peers decreases); apply pedagogical tact in assessing the child’s work and behavior; draw the child’s attention to shortcomings in teaching and behavior in such a way as not to suppress or humiliate him, but to appeal to his dignity, to open up the opportunity for him to become different; provide an opportunity to correct mistakes; evaluate not only the result, but also diligence; do not compare children with each other and with others (it is possible to compare children with approximately the same capabilities with an explanation of the child’s capabilities, i.e., if he only wants this, he will also do the job perfectly, since he also has all the prerequisites for this) ; do not discuss the failures or shortcomings of the child publicly. Since we were talking about the susceptibility of self-esteem to the influence of the media, I propose additional ways that will help reduce the negative influence and develop useful skills in the child: teach to analyze information (songs, films, games, etc. .); introduce examples of high art; normalize the amount of time a child is exposed to media; exclude exposure to media on the child before bedtime; introduce censorship of films, cartoons, video games, music videos, magazines and Internet sites; discuss the phenomenon of media influence with children and question the materialistic and moral values promoted by the media; help the child identify himself with positive characters; talk about morality. As a child grows up, he develops the ability to think critically about information coming from outside. And a child who is sufficiently self-confident, with high self-esteem, formed in the early years of life under the influence of parents and immediate environment, will be highly protected from the bad influence of not only the media, but also society. I would like to say: “Parents, take part in the lives of your children. Help them become confident, independent, thinking people. It’s in your power.".
