From the author: This is my comment for the publication “Russian Planet”, the full text can be easily found by the title “Getting your thoughts and wardrobe in order”Getting your thoughts and wardrobe in order – If a person goes to the store and doesn’t want to spend money on some goods, the necessity of which he doubts, then perhaps he should think about what he really wants, notes psychologist and psychotherapist Kirill Bolgov. - Behind any desire there is some kind of need, and often desire and need are not the same thing. If you determine the real need of a person, then it brings into a person’s life much more pleasure, joy and other positive feelings than one or another initial wish. Very often, behind the desire to spend money and buy unnecessary goods, there is, for example, a need for recognition. People dream of changing their social circle and, by buying certain things, they want to earn the opportunity to be close to certain people. But this can be achieved without unnecessary expenses, and the obstacles to achieving such a goal are always subjective, they are within a person. It is quite difficult to consciously overcome this state, but it is worth at least trying and explaining to yourself what is behind shopaholism and what you really want. If big expenses are not part of your plans, then when going to the shopping center, it is better not to take credit cards with you and use cash. When a person pays with a bank card, money appears as something virtual. When you give cash at the checkout, certain protective mechanisms are triggered: “real” money, which you count out while analyzing how much is left in your wallet, is more difficult to spend. “Here, probably, the “special forces advice” would be appropriate,” continues Kirill Bolgov, “that we must carefully prepare for any danger.” If you go to a store and are not sure that you can control yourself and get out without spending all the money, then you need to prepare for this danger in advance. It might be worth coming later, before closing. That is, limit yourself in time, distribute it more rationally and thus spend less. Or take only a certain amount with you. And when you are ready to buy some not particularly necessary thing, you can try to suddenly change your activity, for example, go have a snack, just drink coffee and sit and think about whether you really need this blouse or jeans.
