Hi. Today we will talk about depression. Let’s be clear right away: Depression does not arise from laziness and not because you like to suffer. It cannot be cured by saying “don’t be sad”, working in the garden, or giving birth. Depression. Or as it should be called, depressive disorder is the most common mental health disorder in the world. For simplicity, in the future I will speak briefly - depression. Up to 5% of the world's population experiences depression. This is official data. We should not forget that not all people decide to seek help and live in loneliness and isolation. Approximately every fourth Russian has experienced a depressive state at least once in his life. The manifestation and duration are, of course, very different. For some it is a two-week episode, while for others they have been struggling with depression for many years. If you're familiar with depression, you're not alone. This condition in ancient times was compared to black bile, and now I compare it to black glasses, because of which you even see the sun as gray. Not even a day is enough to tell everything important. But that doesn't mean it's not worth talking about. In today's video, I'll talk about one good book about depression, which is worth reading if this condition is familiar to you. Let's look at how your thoughts cause pain. Most often, depression is viewed as an emotional disorder - which means, it would seem, you need to establish contact with your feelings. But in reality it’s not quite like that. A sudden deterioration in mood and negative emotions is a symptom of depression, like a runny nose when you have a cold. And all the negative states that you experience in general are the result of distorted negative thinking. Every time you feel depressed for some reason, try to identify the negative thought that arose immediately before the deterioration of the condition and caused it. Let's discuss how depression affects self-esteem and how it differs from sadness. What beliefs prevent a person from coping with depression? Depression has no adaptive or productive function and is one of the worst forms of suffering. But you can deal with it. Most depressed people believe they are hopeless. This is a destructive misconception. Hopelessness is just a symptom of depression, not a fact. It can make a significant difference in your well-being. And remember, you don’t have to deal with this alone! How will we conclude? Depression is a common mental health disorder that many people know firsthand. If you suspect you have symptoms of depression, do not self-medicate or use folk remedies. Don’t go on forums, don’t waste your energy trying to weed out nonsense from current recommendations. Find the Beck or Burns Depression Inventory on the Internet and take it 1-2 times a week for several weeks. And write down the results. There is no need to interpret them. Think of it like taking your blood pressure twice a day before visiting a cardiologist. If you go on the Internet, you will be horrified. If you have high scores and it only gets worse, it means that there is a problem. Seek advice from a specialist and he will help you determine what is happening.
