A worthwhile satirist - psychologist, historian and philosopher rolled into one. This is someone who is easy to read in difficult times. The amazing Arkady Averchenko, back in the distant pre-revolutionary empire, wrote the story “Razor in Jelly”, the value of which for me now turned out to be not only artistic. I can’t do without a spoiler. It begins with the fact that a writer and an artist turn over in a line carrying them on business due to the recklessness of the driver. Both find themselves thrown onto a dusty road. The meaning of the story is in two human strategies for responding to a complex event. A sharp and unyielding man-razor, cuts everything in his way to restore justice. He actively screams and presents his supposed damage, pressing hard in the right direction. He does not tolerate delay and reconciliation, he is too harsh, hypertrophied critical in the name of truth and cruel. It leaves puddles of emotional blood. And it would seem that the anger is righteous. But there is Man Kissel. Yes, yes, so amorphous, soft, periodically spreading somewhere, but not losing its shape and seemingly in no way active, reasonable. Without categorical statements, but thoroughly disposed in his direction, without psycho-flashes, calmly silent in response to active calls. And you already guessed it - any razor drowns in jelly. Admit it, rarely anyone likes jelly in real life. They mainly support the razor - “don’t be a wimp, hit him!” But the amazing value of a viscous substance is not in the ability to tear and throw something, but in the thoroughness of remaining in place, where the severity of problems is extinguished. The point is not to break wood, but for now to get your bearings, SAVE and move on with small hesitating movements. Maybe even without words. Inside Razor there is anger from hidden fear and horror, giving an incredible rush of affect. The call to punish and destroy everyone and everything is an indicator of maximum fear in a situation where there was a possibility of suffering much more, more painfully than it turned out to be. An attempt to prevent the thought that in a state of catastrophe you could not do anything. Inside Kisel there is the same fear and helplessness, but recognized. Then there is confusion, bewilderment and the need to ground yourself in order to assess your own damage and exhale while everything has worked out. And where a Man will turn, in which direction, depends on very individual and intrapsychic characteristics. You cannot force someone to give an emotional reaction according to plan; it will be born independently of those around you. Acute stress experienced manifests itself after a shock event in different ways. Let's remember the reactions of survival under stress - hit, run, freeze and transfer the knowledge to the story. It is unlikely that the heroes managed to do any of this at the very moment of the fall of the line; it happened too unexpectedly. They could only freeze for a moment. Freezing, by the way, later gives the most complex traumatic reaction, if you fail to win back what was missed. The reactions of Kissel and Razor are a way of getting out of shock, a reaction to an event. But jelly is not freezing, it is a form that makes the content slow and even predictable, where the same simple thoughts seem to be pushed and come to light. Simple dashes here are basic. What keeps a person in crisis is the most elementary level of the meaning of life, “we survived today and are good.” A form where there is no need to spend the necessary energy after the fact on something that, alas, cannot be influenced. A way to acknowledge the limitations of a resource without stopping life. The choice of which form to use is not always made consciously: to actively get involved in a virtual fight for the truth or to accept the presence of one’s own and another point of view. But a person is more than his choice, because elections can change. Read Averchenko, you won’t regret it! He has a lot of other interesting things in a modern way.
