In this article I would like to illustrate with a clear example the fact described in the previous article: the causes of our psychological difficulties, as well as psychosomatic diseases, in the present, often lie in our past, often in a place that we have no idea about at all. This is the story of Marilyn Murray, an American psychotherapist, creator of the Murray method, which has helped countless people around the world recover from trauma, addiction and everyday difficulties. It would seem that Marilyn’s childhood story looks quite positive. Until a certain point, she grew up as a happy, smiling child, seemingly dearly loved and in a prosperous family. It was only from the age of 8 that she began to suffer from terrible dreams in which she choked on glue, asthma attacks, and when she moved to a state with a different climate in the hope of being cured of asthmatic manifestations, they were replaced by terrible headaches. At the same time, Marilyn led a very active life - was an exemplary Christian, regularly attending and participating in church life, a faithful wife and mother of two wonderful daughters, the founder of a support group for women “More than Friends”, and the director (together with her husband) of the art gallery they created. It would seem, what else is needed for happiness? But despite the apparent well-being, by the age of 40, Marilyn’s headaches, which could no longer be stopped by anything, began to torment her so much that she was on the verge of suicide. Can you imagine to what despair a deeply religious person needs to be brought to, knowing that suicide is one of the most serious sins, so that he is ready to decide on it... Thank God, Marilyn’s closest friend strongly recommended psychotherapy to her, and she went to another state to try this is as a last resort. During therapy, Marilyn suddenly remembered that at the age of 8 she had been gang raped by a group of soldiers in a vacant lot when she was returning home from singing class and missed her stop. This was such a traumatic event for the child that her psyche was unable to cope with it and, with the help of defense mechanisms, hid this memory deep in the subconscious. As a result of this, for so many years Marilyn had no idea that she was going through this experience, but it lies in the subconscious, like radioactive waste buried under our house - we do not know what it is, but its consequences are constantly on affect us. However, as Marilyn says, God always gives the opportunity to make something good out of everything bad, and when, during therapy, she was able to live, which was not at all easy, and let go of this experience, not only did her health significantly improve and The headache attacks disappeared, but a side result appeared, which was especially important for all of us. Marilyn went to study as a psychologist to understand everything that was happening to her, and the result of her research was a method that, as it turns out, is effective not only for her, but also for thousands of people around the world. If you want to get acquainted with In more detail about Marilyn’s story, you can find and download (or buy at the Murray Method International Center) her book “Prisoner of Another War.” In my opinion, this is one of the most profound books on psychotherapy and personal growth, motivating both clients and specialists for therapy and in-depth programs. I wish everyone to heal their traumatic experiences and find the key to a huge resource within, as Marilyn did!
