Earlier I wrote: Why support is needed 5 mistakes in providing support In this article I want to write about how to properly support a person who finds himself in a difficult situation. Support is a valuable resource in the life of every person. These are actions that are aimed at the benefit of a person (who finds himself in a difficult situation), which help him cope with life’s difficulties. First, you need to figure out whether the person really needs your help. The easiest and most reliable way to find out is to ask about it directly. We are all different and perceive this world differently. What is good for one is death for another! You can paraphrase this proverb like this: What is death for one is good for another. Trying to help and support a person who does not want this help, you are wasting your time and risk falling into the dynamic: victim -aggressor-rescuer. Which will not benefit either side. Here we are talking about adults, capable, mentally and physically healthy people! Also, with the loss/death of a loved one, a person may not realize and deny the need for support. How to withstand the grief of a loved one Choosing the right words in each specific situation is an entire art. If you understand that you cannot find words, then it is better to just be nearby, silently. Very valuable in providing support will be providing the person with space where he can speak out and react to his emotions. Sometimes it is enough to listen carefully to a person and allow him to get angry/sad/mourning in your presence in order for him to easily solve his problems. It is also very important to let the person know that you understand the importance and significance of the current situation for him. In this way, a person realizes that he is significant to you, understands that you accept and understand him, and this gives him strength. Beware of giving advice. As a rule, they do more harm than good. Remember that you are giving advice based on your worldview, and we are all different and perceive everything differently. When trying to support someone, remember that you can only help someone from a resourceful state. Don’t forget to take care of yourself. I’ll tell you how to support yourself in the next article.
