Just yesterday I finished reading Thomas Campbell’s book “The China Study. A Simple Transition to a Healthy Lifestyle.” Topics like this have been interesting to me for quite some time, and I try to study the most fundamental books from those that appear in this area. The book definitely did not disappoint. If you are interested in the topic of healthy eating and lifestyle in general, then you should carefully read it. The author pleases with a comprehensive, but at the same time, laconic approach to the matter. There are simply no lengthy discussions, but a large amount of factual data is given - mainly the results of various experiments and studies. The book begins, in many ways, with “philosophical” questions, like: - How did our ancestors eat (and who knows?) - What kind of food did we eat? their health was (also unclear) - Is there a universal optimal diet... STOP! This question, according to Thomas Campbell, is no longer philosophical. He is quite confident that he has found the answer and will share it with us in subsequent chapters of the book. In fact, he reveals his main “secret” almost immediately, openly declaring that there is nothing better than a whole plant-based diet, after which he expands on this topic with a variety of sides. After reading the "China Study", you will learn all the most important things about various food groups, about refined plants, about sugar and soy, about oils and fats, about fish, wheat, gluten, vitamins, organic food and GMOs, and much more - much more. It is important that all the information is very well structured and there are many tables that simplify the perception of data and their analysis. Surprisingly, this book turned out to be the last straw for me, and I finally went to the website of the Research Institute of Nutrition of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences to study the composition of some products and be greatly surprised by certain food stereotypes that have been living in our heads for decades. I will not reveal all the secrets - you can make interesting discoveries for yourself. What else can I say about this book? Among other things, it has a separate chapter devoted to how to eat properly for pregnant women, how to feed newborns and preschool children. In addition, the author separately examines the process of switching from a regular diet to a whole plant diet with minimal “psychological losses” and maximum benefits for health. Often books about proper nutrition lack some “humanity”. The author did a good job, told everything from a scientific point of view, but missed a number of psychological and other difficulties that will prevent those suffering from taking a new path. But this is not about Thomas Campbell. He has foreseen all this and gives a very detailed and (which is important) completely implementable plan for the transition to a new way of life. He examines all the main obstacles that each of us may face when wanting to seriously change our diet and lifestyle and gives clear recommendations for eliminating them. Next, you will find a decent selection of recipes for every day (breakfasts, lunches and dinners), which will serve as an excellent starting point for the formation of new food preferences. And finally, in the book you will find general principles of nutrition, using which you can easily choose the healthiest and most valuable products in stores. From now on, you will not be misled by colorful labels with promising slogans. Will there be a verdict? There will definitely not be an unambiguous verdict. If the topic is important and relevant to you, without a doubt, you need to read it, but the most important decision will always ripen in your own head. In many cases, I can definitely recommend this or that information for “use,” but nutrition is a slightly more controversial topic. therefore, it must be guided not only by research results and statistical data, but also by our own innate instinct - it does not deceive us if we listen to it.
