From the author: The article describes the second option for using the “Join and Leave” method for joint work of family members on the problem of a relative’s addiction to computer games. This application option is associated with the actualization of new needs, the satisfaction of which is associated with other activities. Another option to rid your family member of gambling addiction is to help him find and become interested in other activities in order to satisfy new, more significant needs. To begin with, of course, such needs of a gambler must be found and help him realize their relevance. And then - to help find those activities during which he will be able to satisfy these updated needs. For a better understanding of this stage, I will also illustrate it with a specific example from my practice. So, we will talk about a 15-year-old teenager. He was immersed in an online game that he was playing remotely with his two classmates. At the same time, he abandoned music school, in which he had 1 year left to study (in synthesizer class), and his performance at school also decreased. After consulting with me, his father, during a long conversation with his son, found out that the guy really likes to compete with friends to prove that he is better at this game. This game united and rallied a small group of these guys, it was a certain condition for being in the company of friends. And it seemed that everything was a dead end. But no. The father started a conversation with his son about girls. It turned out that the son, somewhere deep down in his soul, might want to be interesting to them, but still did not pay much attention to them. He was completely absorbed in rivalry with friends. The father noticed to his son that his friends were already interested in him and liked him. But being liked by girls is much cooler. The son admitted that in his class there are guys who are already hanging out with girls and that these guys, in the eyes of other classmates, look like more mature and serious people, and enjoy greater authority and influence. To be cooler in the game among friends, as the teenager believed, means to be more interesting and girls from the class. However, as the father logically noted in a conversation with his son, girls are not able to appreciate this coolness of his, since they do not play such games and do not understand anything about them. This means they are unable to appreciate his achievements. In other words, his records in the game will not help him win the attention of girls. And the teenager already began to want to like them. He also wanted the girls to run after him in herds. The son admitted to his father that he tried to tell the girls in the class that he had the highest achievements in the game, compared to two other classmates, and shared his latest records, but the girls didn’t really want to listen to him, they considered him a fool and a naive youngster. To dad. managed to convince his son that the girls would run after him if his son graduated from music school and could play on stage in some musical group. Girls will run after him if he graduates well from school, enters a prestigious university, receives a sought-after education, and then gets a well-paid job. But if he competes with his friends in tank games, then only among them will he be cool. After this conversation, the father from time to time, interjecting his reminders about what kind of guys girls like according to the situation, praised his son when he brought him home good grades, mastered new techniques for playing the synthesizer. His father praised him for his success in both schools, emphasizing that being a cool musician was much cooler than being a cool tank player. Gradually, the guy began to spend less and less time playing the game, interest in it decreased to the minimum that did not interfere with successful studies both at school and in music class. As far as I know, the teenager has now recovered from gambling addiction.
