We ourselves are the creators of realizing our own dreams, and they become possible thanks largely to self-control. Most people know how to make important changes in their own lives. For example, lose weight. It would seem that the recipe is simple: eat less high-calorie foods, add more fruits and vegetables to your daily diet and ensure optimal physical activity. Just? Of course, but for some reason for many people this task cannot be accomplished for years, and some start a new life every Monday - some with a diet, some without cigarettes, some trying to give up alcohol. Although everyone has different tasks to achieve subjective well-being, the scheme for achieving them is the same. Firstly, you need to honestly answer the questions “what do you really want?”, “why do you need this and will your true goals be solved by giving up something or, on the contrary, developing a habit of something?” Secondly, after an honest analysis and determination of “why all this is needed,” begin to act. A new action in the life of an adult is always a breaking of established neural connections and the creation of new ones. To form new habits, just like giving up old ones (for example, the habit of taking a walk every day instead of taking a sofa and a can of beer), legendary willpower is required, the absence or presence of which is usually used to justify many things. I prefer to call this skill self-control. When self-control becomes automatic, truly magical changes occur in your life. Cognitive behavioral therapy is the best way to help develop such an important skill. The development of self-control is a very necessary and extremely useful thing, but there is one BUT! If you draw buckets of self-control from the well of self-control, it will soon dry up. This means that the expenditure of mental energy to achieve results in any direction must be reasonable. The destruction of old and the formation of new neural connections requires a large expenditure of mental energy. For example, if you apply self-control simultaneously in several areas of life (at the same time losing weight, being an ideal mother, working three jobs, forcing yourself to listen to opera, etc.), then the psycho-emotional stress will become so strong that the self-defense mechanism will turn on (apathy, procrastination) , which will put your entire life and the implementation of plans on pause. Choose one or two areas of life that you want to change with the help of self-control at the same time. Even in one direction, several plans for changing the neural map can be used. For example, if you are losing weight, you have to use strength and self-control in relation to food intake, as well as build the right habits regarding physical activity. This is a lot of stress for the whole body, including the psyche. Therefore, you should not introduce anything new into your life until your new habits have become automatic. Habits are formed (i.e., new neural connections through self-control) from 20 to 40 days, so I advise you to wait this time before actively creating new changes in your life. It’s good that self-control or willpower is an acquired quality. It can be learned. Therefore, regularity is important, as when playing sports. Regularity and systematic implementation of tasks is the key to success and achievement. Start small - just straighten your back every time you remember about your posture. Then move on to more complex self-control training options. Research has shown that practicing self-control in small ways, such as washing dishes immediately after a meal, improves other areas of life that require self-control. Gradually, by developing the ability to self-control, you will become more collected. The route to the goal begins with efforts to train self-control. In moments when you give up, willpower or self-control comes into play. Research has shown that people who have sufficiently trained self-control abilities achieve greater.
