There are certain main points of the first consultation that are common to most psychologists. Getting to know each other, studying what you came to the psychologist with, etc. The nuances vary from psychologist to psychologist and from approach to approach. Moreover, the first meeting may also look different for one psychologist. I will describe my typical first meetings.First meeting:1. Acquaintance. It's not so much about greeting each other and getting information of interest from each other. How much opportunity does it give you to form an impression of a specialist? Understand whether a psychologist and his working style are right for you. 2. Formulation and specification of the problem you want to work with3. Diagnostics. Most often this is a conversation in which I ask questions. You answer questions. The purpose of the questions is to collect the necessary information about the problem. Depending on the number and magnitude of problems, diagnostics may take 1-3 meetings. I may ask you to fill out questionnaires, which we will discuss later. 4. Activity planning. What you will do on your own before the next meeting in order to increase the effectiveness of working with a psychologist. 5. Coordination. Discussion of organizational aspects of working with a psychologist. Frequency of meetings, method of communication, time and days of meeting, etc. When the diagnosis is completed (at the first, second or third meeting depending on the problem):6. Explanations. I express my hypotheses to you, explain your condition. I'm listening to your opinion. If necessary, the hypothesis is refined. The hypothesis can be supplemented or changed during the work itself. After all, you and your condition will change. As we communicate, I will learn more and more nuances.7. Determining the goal. Together with you we determine the specific result you want to achieve. Signs that will make it clear that it has been achieved. 8. Approximate plan. I am explaining to you our upcoming actions to deal with the problem. The detail and scope of the plan varies greatly depending on the problem and the specific case. Adjustments can be made to the plan as work progresses if they are necessary to achieve the result. Or if you want to do something else that is not included in the plan. At all subsequent meetings, work is already underway on the problem. I described the ideal sequence and structure. At a specific meeting, in the interests and based on the comfort and needs of the client, the sequence may be slightly disrupted. But all these key points are present when working with any client.
