Change attracts and at the same time frightens, causing resistance. “I want to change my thinking and stop being afraid.” Clients come to me with this request. What can a psychologist do to help a client solve his problem? To begin, ask questions, answering which the client will be able to understand: what his fear means to him, how it is useful to him and how it is harmful, what he will gain if he gets rid of fear and what he will lose. You can establish contact with fear and hear, what he wants to tell you. Sometimes this message can change a person's life. Changing thinking is a large-scale goal that requires large resources and investment of action to achieve it. When a person works on his request with a psychologist in the CBT approach, he begins to realize what automatic thoughts, cognitive distortions and deep-seated beliefs prevent him from moving forward towards his goal. Sometimes this path turns out to be completed much faster than expected, and sometimes, on the contrary, more slowly. It depends on how cluttered our thinking vessel is. Some people try to walk this path alone. They use online resources and books as an ally. In this case, the road may turn out to be much longer than going along the same route with an experienced specialist. Once, during a difficult period in my life, I also decided to cope on my own. At that time I had not yet studied psychology, but I had an idea of ​​how working with a psychologist happens from the experience of personal therapy in past years. The experience was generally positive, but not productive. Therefore, I came to the conclusion that I didn’t really need the help of a psychologist. As a result, over the next few years, I drove myself to such a state that at some point I was afraid for my mental health. Then I ran to a psychotherapist for magic pills that should were to calm all my worries. To my surprise, he said that the pills would not radically change my situation, and that long-term psychotherapy would be more effective. I didn’t really like the answer, but I was desperate and agreed to follow this path. I walked long and hard, discovering for myself what I had not noticed before. But it was worth it.
