How can a psychologist, using the colors in clothing, additionally influence the work with the client? From the practice of recruiting HR personnel and profilers, I know well that each person develops his own preferences in clothes that are not as easy to change as it might seem. Appearance design is one of those criteria that tells a lot about a person’s psychotype, especially if we have the opportunity to look not only in context, but also in dynamics. therefore, dressing someone up, and dressing yourself up in something unusual for yourself, is not as easy as it seems. On the other hand, nothing prevents us from consciously managing the impression of ourselves as a specialist or a client session if we set ourselves such task. The best colors for working as a psychologist are dark blue and medium blue. They inspire trust and respect for the specialist’s personality and emphasize his professionalism. (This is why most teachers in the department traditionally dressed this way). At the same time, it is the color of introspection, in-depth knowledge of oneself. This color has a calming effect on clients, which is logical. It’s good to dilute this range with additional light shades so as not to overwhelm the client. It is better if lighter colors are closer to the face, especially as you get older, because it gives a more fresh and optimistic look. Light shades in sandy beige, cream tones help in establishing contact with the client, help the client open up, and neutralize tension. If add softness and richness to these tones, for example, honey, ocher, brown shades, this will have a good effect on clients with increased anxiety and will help them stabilize. If your task is to activate the client’s mental processes and evoke certain emotions in him, it is recommended to use burgundy in clothes (dark red palette). Because of these properties, it is used in teaching. If you, like me, love light blue and light gray shades, be careful: they can create the effect of distance from the client. Therefore, it is better to regulate the use of these shades arbitrarily, with justification. Bright, rich, irritating, very dark shades - red, yellow, lemon, purple, black - irritate, increase the level of aggressiveness and anxiety. Black color and similar graphite shades reduce the emotional background of the client and can increase his depression. It would be interesting to know if you use such a tool as clothing color in your practice, and what observations do you have in this regard? Share in the comments!
