Hundreds of people, every day, try to quit smoking, lose weight, learn English, start going to the gym, stop eating at night, try to force themselves to do something useful. But one categories of people, these plans are perfectly implemented, while others constantly fail. People make promises to themselves, especially before the New Year, that they will do something and stick to something, but at some point, all plans collapse and everything is getting out of control. And the person then simply ignores this and says: “It’s probably not for me, since it’s so hard.” Weakness was once also a certain problem for me, until I started to figure it out and understood how it works and how manage in order to cope with impulses. To show how this works, we will need to touch a little on neurobiology. Willpower, scientifically, is called self-control, the ability to resist momentary impulses in favor of long-term goals. Order a pie or salad in a cafe, see new episode of a TV series or go to the gym, get ready for work or go hang out with a friend? After all, each of you has probably experienced a similar struggle of motives. I am not “obsessed” with self-control, however, my personal opinion is that those people who regulate and manage their behavior tend to achieve more results, have a more successful career, and are less susceptible to any addictive conditions, and most importantly, have a high level of mental and physical health. People with a low level of self-control, on the contrary, have a high risk of acquiring some kind of addiction, for example, becoming an alcoholic, having an unsafe sex life, being overweight, suffering from overeating or other bad habits. Trying to understand how willpower works, people often talk about such concepts as “Heart and Mind”, “Passenger and Driver”, “Emotions and Ratio”, “Id and Ego”, etc., but in essence, it’s all about one, that there are two types of thinking, one of which is based on reason and self-control, the other on emotions.
