The difference between shame and guilt is that shame is a feeling that arises when a rule of society is violated - and this is discovered. Guilt is a feeling that arises when an internal rule is violated. Let's imagine a person who went to have a bite to eat in some establishment. There is a separate table where you can pour yourself ketchup or put some mustard. This man puts four spoons of mustard on himself at once! And he is not ashamed, he is not gnawing at the feeling of guilt, although no one does this, it is not accepted. Suddenly he notices that there is a man standing nearby who sees how much mustard he put in. At this moment, our person has a feeling of awkwardness or shame. Thus, until the broken rule was noticed by society, there was no feeling of shame. But it appeared when the “violation” was discovered. Let’s imagine this same person with an incredibly heightened sense of justice and a reverent attitude towards rules and norms. And he really likes mustard. He sees that he can easily afford to put as much mustard as he wants - after all, no one will notice, and who will forbid him, in the end. But this is impossible for him, because as soon as he puts a lot of mustard on himself, he will experience a feeling of guilt - he will despise himself, humiliate himself, and so on. Because he will break his own internal rule, which will cause guilt.
