In this article I will share my personal experience and the experience of my clients, as well as reflections on this topic. I often hear from clients that they would like to completely get rid of their problems, change their character and, in fact, become a new different person, completely its opposite. Is this possible? For example, slow people want to become electric brooms, anxious people want to become fearless leaders, sensitive people dream of becoming insensitive, etc. The fact is that we have problems for a reason; as a rule, they want to tell us something, to emphasize our individuality, our characteristics, to protect us from something terrible. Let’s look at examples. Personally, I experience depression when I speed up and start to be active a lot, because I myself am slow and don’t tolerate any kind of movement well, I like to do everything with feeling, properly, with arrangement. But it happens that necessity forces you to do a lot of things in a short time. When I began to listen to myself and live at my own pace, the depression ended. What, for example, can anxiety be associated with? Anxiety usually leads a person to be cautious; if a person ignores this, then panic sets in. If a person listens to it, he begins to treat himself with care. And thus, he begins to make friends with his peculiarity. That is, when a person is overwhelmed by anxiety, he thinks about what she is trying to protect him from. I will give my example. Once upon a time, a hooligan attacked me on the street in the evening, and after that, I became afraid to walk past that place. But I soon realized that it was not the place itself that I needed to avoid, but not to walk there alone in the dark, since this area was not very crowded. And after that, I was able to calmly walk there during the day alone, because I understood that nothing would happen to me there during the day. A person who comes to therapy with the problem of aggressiveness may discover within himself a large supply of energy, which he can direct to achieving his goals, he becomes a determined and purposeful person. That is, after therapy, problems do not change into opposite qualities, they change their focus and begin to serve the person. Sincerely, Alena Tikhomirova
